Find the seat before you move the points

The most useful habit in award travel is also the least glamorous: finish the search before the transfer.

A promising award screenshot is the beginning of a search, not the end. Availability can differ between programs, and the operating airline's site is not proof that another program can book the same seat.

Before moving bank points, sign into the program you intend to use and search the exact itinerary for every traveler. Confirm the date, cabin and total cash charge. Read the current transfer rules for your bank and receiving program, including whether the transfer can be reversed; do not assume it can.

Check every segment

A business-class result can contain an economy connection. Expand the details and inspect the cabin on each leg, connection length and arrival day. Compare nearby dates and direct flights where practical. A cheaper award with an awkward connection can consume time you wanted at the destination.

If you are traveling together, search for the full party from the start. Finding one seat and hoping another appears is a strategy with a very specific risk, which everyone should understand before booking.

Have a plan for the gap

Verify transfer timing through the official provider, but allow for exceptions. Seats can change while points move. Keep a second itinerary or a sensible paid alternative in mind, and avoid transferring more points than the booking requires simply because an attractive promotion appears.

When the balance arrives, run the search again and inspect the final purchase screen. Until a reservation is issued, call it a candidate. That small change in language prevents a surprising number of expensive assumptions.
