Before you use points in Tokyo, price the first night
A late arrival and an early departure can change the points calculation. Price a realistic cash room, then weigh the location and the hours you’ll actually use.
The lowest-priced points night can be free on an eligible five-night booking. The real question is whether five nights fits your trip.

Illustrative photography. No firsthand stay is implied. If you are already planning a five-night stay, Marriott's Stay for 5, Pay for 4 benefit deserves a check before you book each night separately. Marriott's published guidance says eligible five-consecutive-night award bookings under one reservation charge points for four nights, with the lowest points-value night free.
The useful detail is the lowest-priced night. It is not necessarily the fifth chronological night, and a varying nightly quote changes the total saving. Look at the full reservation rather than multiplying one attractive nightly price by four.
A longer city stay can make sense when it gives you one less hotel change, an easy day trip or room to enjoy the neighborhood. It makes less sense when you would rather spend that time somewhere else. An award benefit should improve the trip you want, not dictate it.
Compare one eligible five-night reservation with your realistic alternative: four nights, a different hotel, or a split stay. Account for transport and other spending created by extending the trip. An additional restaurant bill is still a bill even when the room uses no extra points.
Read the current eligibility rules before mixing cash, certificates or other award types into the booking. Do not assume that a sequence of five nights using different payment methods qualifies simply because the dates are consecutive.
Finally, inspect the cancellation deadline and all unavoidable charges in the final quote. The benefit is easiest to evaluate when everything sits in one reservation and you can see exactly which points night is being removed.
