A points valuation should help you choose a booking. It should not make your spreadsheet look rich. The familiar cents-per-point calculation is a useful starting point: subtract the award's cash charges from the comparable cash price, divide by the points required, then multiply by 100.
For example, a hypothetical $600 ticket available for 30,000 points plus $60 gives 1.8 cents per point. That is an arithmetic example, not an advertised fare. If a flight you would happily take costs $350 instead, use that alternative when evaluating the practical saving.
Compare like with like
Match cabin, route, baggage and change rules for flights. Match room type, dates and cancellation terms for hotels. An expensive flexible rate is not a fair comparison with a restrictive award if you never needed that flexibility.
Also account for points or miles you would earn on the paid booking and for extra transport the award creates. You do not need to calculate everything to the last cent; you do need to notice a two-hour detour or an unnecessary overnight.
Read our table as a planning tool
Boba Travel's valuation table expresses editorial estimates with a range. It is not an official cash-out floor and is not derived from a live census of available seats. Your realistic use can sit above or below it.
A redemption below a benchmark can still be excellent if it makes a trip possible without debt or friction. A redemption above it can still be poor if it sends you somewhere you do not want to go. The trip remains the point.
