United Explorer’s 80,000-mile headline involves two separate decisions
Check whether the spending fits your budget—and whether sharing purchasing access fits your life—before pursuing the full bonus.
Current cardholders can earn 7% on eligible dining after activation, but groceries and qualifying Red Cross donations share the same $1,500 quarterly spending limit.

An imagined scene, created for this story. If you already hold Chase Freedom Flex, activate Q4 before putting your usual restaurant bills on it. Eligible dining earns 7% total cash back while the rotating bonus applies. The catch comes early: dining, qualifying groceries and eligible American Red Cross donations all draw from one $1,500 spending cap.
Chase announced the categories September 15. The spending window runs October 1 through December 31, 2026, with activation due December 14. This is an existing-card spending decision; there is no need to turn a quarterly category into a new-card application.
Why 7%? Flex combines its 1% base reward, 2% additional dining reward and 4% additional quarterly reward. Counting the base twice would produce an incorrect 8%. The older Chase Freedom gets the quarterly 5%; the dining stack discussed here belongs to Freedom Flex.
Here is a hypothetical using spending already in your budget: $900 of eligible dining and $600 of eligible groceries, with no other bonus-category purchases or returns. That fills the shared cap.
Dining would earn $63 and groceries $30, for $93 total cash back. At ordinary rates, the same purchases would earn $27 on dining and $6 on groceries, or $33. Activation adds $60 in this example.
That distinction matters when comparing cards. The quarterly promotion adds four percentage points on up to $1,500 of qualifying spending, making its maximum incremental reward $60. Total rewards vary with your spending mix. After the rotating cap is exhausted, eligible Flex dining still earns its ordinary 3%.
Use the cap for purchases you would make anyway. Extra dinners, donations or interest-bearing debt can cost more than the additional rewards deliver.
Grocery eligibility excludes Walmart, Target, wholesale and warehouse clubs, and other merchants outside Chase’s grocery definition. Buying food does not establish a qualifying grocery transaction.
Dining depends on merchant coding, too. A hotel restaurant can qualify if the purchase is classified as restaurant spending; a charge appearing on your hotel bill is no guarantee. Bakeries, caterers, meal kits and gift card merchants are excluded. Eligible delivery and takeout must classify as restaurant purchases.
For qualifying Red Cross donations, use the official channels Chase identifies. Activate at ChaseBonus.com and leave room for processing: merchants must submit qualifying charges by December 31. A last-day purchase alone does not establish eligibility.
