The premium-card audit you should do before renewal

An impressive list of credits is not the same as money saved. Count the benefits that fit the life you already have.

An imagined scene, created for this story.

A premium card can make travel noticeably nicer. It can also turn you into the part-time administrator of a collection of credits. Before renewal, judge it against your calendar and habits, not the issuer's headline value.

Current premium-card pages show very different approaches: lounge access, travel credits, hotel programs and other benefits can all matter. The same perk can be worth plenty to one person and almost nothing to someone who lives elsewhere or books differently.

Use three columns

List what you used, what you would have bought without the card and what using the benefit cost you. A credit against a hotel booking is only a saving after comparing the final rate with a suitable alternative. A restaurant credit that makes you spend more than planned deserves a smaller value than its face amount.

Check enrollment, eligible merchants, booking channels, timing windows and exclusions directly in the issuer terms. Split credits across the periods in which you can actually use them. Do not count the full annual allowance because one monthly or quarterly installment worked.

Give comfort an honest price

Lounge access has a personal value; it does not need a heroic spreadsheet estimate. Decide what you would comfortably pay for the visits you actually make. Do the same for convenience, insurance and hotel perks, taking care not to count one benefit twice.

If the realistic total does not justify the annual fee, compare other products and discuss account options with the issuer before taking action. Our card directory links to current official terms. Affiliate application links will appear only after they are supplied and verified.
